From the official website, “um3detroit is an interdisciplinary gathering that brings together researchers, educators, students, and community partners — from across the University of Michigan campuses and Detroit-based organizations — to share and strengthen our connections to Detroit and each other.” During its inception in 2017, I was asked to create the logo and branding by a former professor. The idea was to embody the spirit of Detroit while showing the connection with Michigan’s three campuses (Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn). This was the thought with embedding the “3” within the “D” itself, showing the two entities’ connection. The typeface, Bar Sans created by Alex Bergin, was inspired by the hand painted signage along 8 mile in Detroit and was used throughout the event on large screens and small flyers.
The logo highlights the “3” campuses working within Detroit, the “D”. We chose to include some historical Detroit building in the skyline to further show the connection.
